About the tribunal
The establishment of a Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal was announced by the Premier, the Hon. Anna Bligh MP, on 12 March 2008. The new tribunal, expected to commence on 1 December 2009, will amalgamate a number of existing bodies and tribunals. Click to view a full list of amalgamating tribunals (PDF 162k).
The Premier also announced the establishment of an independent panel of experts to provide advice on how best to implement the amalgamated civiel and administrative tribunal, including determining the scope of the jurisdiction of the new tribunal. The panel has delivered two reports to government. The first recommends the scope of QCAT and the second contains recommendations on the legislation needed to create QCAT. These reports can be found on the publications page.
Legislation which creates QCAT, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal Act 2009, was passed by Parliament on 17 June 2009. This legislation establishes the tribunal, provides for the appointment of the president and members, and sets out the generic functions and powers.
